“A good teacher protects his students from his own influence.” ~ Bruce Lee
“The very best heroes and philosophers are dead.”
The Best Guru is (still) YOU.
We often expect perfection from our teachers, assuming their wisdom and lives are flawless.
However, Lee’s insight reveals that a good teacher strives to ensure their students remain untainted by the teacher’s own complex life, mistakes, and challenges.
In death, we are all flawless. Thus, the best heroes and philosophers are dead, beyond scrutiny or contradiction.
Only you fully understand your unique strengths, weaknesses, and talents. That alone qualifies you as the best guru for your own life.
While teachers and "gurus" offer invaluable wisdom, insights, and guidance, it is crucial to critically evaluate their lessons separately from their personal lives. This is Bruce Lee’s message, and it is an important one.
Ultimately, the goal is to become your own guru: to leverage outside wisdom while trusting your own experiences and intuition as you move towards your goals.
After all, we’ve all heard:
"The cobbler's children often go barefoot."
“The carpenter's house is always in need of repair.”
*If you don’t understand the ‘rodent’ reference, it’s related to the famed “Habit Loop” and “Cue, Routine, and Reward” (C.R.R.), which unfortunately overemphasizes a very limited theory on the science of habit development because it’s based solely upon the study of rodents. Humans (YOU) possess choice, intention, and reflection; rodents do not. Thus, P.A.R.R. (Plan, Act, Record, and Reassess) was introduced and originally published in The Habit Factor® (2010). ☝️ 🙌🏽 🤙 🙏
